Training Isn’t Working? It’s Because You’re Doing the Right Things at the Wrong Time

Timing is everything, and most dog owners get it wrong.

You’ve practiced Sit. You’ve offered treats. You’ve watched YouTube videos. But your dog still doesn’t listen when it matters.

The problem isn’t effort. It’s timing.

Most people are doing the right things — just at the wrong time.

At Elite K9 Service, we fix training by aligning obedience with clarity, context, and consequence — when it matters most.

The #1 Mistake: Rewarding Calm When There Was Just Chaos

Owners love to wait for calm before asking anything. But dogs remember what led to the result, not what you do after.

Your dog barked at a guest. Then you asked for Sit and gave a treat.

Guess what they just learned?

“Bark → Sit → Get paid.”

You’re rewarding recovery. But they already rehearsed the wrong behavior.

Correction Comes Late (Or Not At All)

If your dog jumps on someone and you say “No” three seconds later — you missed the window. The dog already moved on.

Correction needs to be:

✔️ Instant

✔️ Clean

✔️ Clear

✔️ Followed by the right behavior

“No.” → Correction. → “Sit.” → Release calmly.

That’s timing. That’s structure. That’s training that sticks.

What You Allow, You Train

Training isn’t just what you practice. It’s what you allow every day.

• Dog pulls on the leash and you follow? Trained.

• Dog ignores “Come” and you do nothing? Trained.

• Dog jumps and gets affection? Trained.

You didn’t mean to reinforce it, but the timing trained it anyway.

How to Fix Your Timing Today

1. Correct During the Build-Up

Don’t wait for the explosion.

Correct the ears, the stare, the body freeze — not the bark.

2. Reward the Calm Before You Ask

Don’t wait for chaos, then beg for Sit.

Catch your dog when they’re already calm, and pay that.

3. Use Pressure with Purpose

Pressure (Slip Leash, Prong Collar, E-Collar, etc.) must be applied and released at the right moment.

• Abrupt Pop on = Wrong choice

• Reward = Right choice

• Every action is communication — Snapping them out of the Negative Mindset

The Truth: It’s Not Just About What You Know, It’s About When You Use It

You could have all the tools: treats, leash, collar, praise, etc..

But if you’re late, unclear, or inconsistent — you’re training confusion.

Timing = clarity.

Clarity = trust.

Trust = reliability.

Final Word

If your training “isn’t working,” don’t give up.

You’re likely doing the right things—you just need to shift your timing and structure.

✔️ Correct early

✔️ Reward the right moments

✔️ Stay consistent

✔️ Lead with timing — not emotion
