How to Train Your Dog to Sit Pretty

  • Apr 20
  • 1 min read

A lot of people try to force “Sit Pretty.”

That’s why the dog falls over, jumps, or gets sloppy.

This is a balance-based command... You’re building it — not forcing it.

Step 1: Start in a Clean Sit

Put your dog into a sit

Bring your hand slightly back toward their head

This naturally causes:

Their front paws to start lifting slightly

The second their paws even slightly lift: Mark it (“Good Sit Pretty”)

Reward immediately

(Recommended: Do this step multiple times)

You're capturing the start of the behavior — not the finished product.

Step 2: Build up the Time

Repeat the same process — But this time start increasing duration and hand placement.

Start stretching it:

• Half a second

• 1 second

• 2 seconds

etc.

Reward after each build up.

If they drop too early... you waited too long.

Shorten it and rebuild.

After they're comfortable, raise your hand higher.

Bring your hand a little up after the "Sit Pretty" — This encourages more lift and balance.

Your dog should begin:

Holding the position longer and more confidently.

Step 3: Balance Rewarding (This is Important)

During training:

• Still reward early reps

• Go back and reward when they just begin holding the lift

(This keeps the behavior clean.)

If you only reward long holds:

You risk loosing the behavior entirely

(Remember where you started, don't try to push it too far)

Reduce Reward Frequency

ONLY once your dog understands:

-Start rewarding less often

-Only reward better reps

Build it slowly — That’s where reliability comes in.
