Why Your Dog Only Listens When They Want To

Because right now… your dog thinks obedience is optional.
⸻
A lot of people say:
“My dog knows the command”
“They just don’t listen sometimes”
“They’re stubborn”
They’re making a decision.
And right now, they’ve learned: I don’t have to listen every time.
What’s Actually Happening
Your dog understands the command — But they’re asking themselves:
“Do I have to do this right now?”
If the answer is “no” — they won’t do it.
That’s why:
They listen inside, not outside
They listen with food, not without
They listen sometimes… not always

Step 1: Stop Repeating Commands
Say the commands once.
Repeating commands back-to-back teaches: “I don’t have to listen the first time.”
At Elite K9 Service, we use Positive Reinforcement Based Training:
Teach with reward
Hold accountable once understood
If you only reward and never correct: Your dog chooses when to listen.
If you say a command they must complete it.
If they don't:
• Say “No” clearly and calmly
• Give an abrupt pop of the leash
• Say the command your looking for them to do
• Once your dog does the command — Say "good (name of command)"
Then move on.
This creates: Consistency.

Step 2: Train Outside the Easy Environment
A perfect dog in your house, but a crazy dog outside means nothing.
You need obedience in the:
• Yard
• Neighborhood
• Public Places
• Distractions
If your dog only listens in one place:
They haven’t been trained — they’ve been conditioned to that environment.
How to fix this:
Instead of teaching multiple “stop” commands:
Use one: “No”
Jumping — “No”
Pulling — “No”
Ignoring — “No”
By doing this, you're building up an individual command.

Step 3: Train in Different Environments
Once you're having consistent results, start training in different environments.
This allows your dog to starting understanding: Everything stays the same everywhere.
Ensure to not change the way you say commands.
• A lot of people say commands one way around their house — and another way outside of it.
-This tells your dog to "act different" because "your different"
(This is vital, due to your dog still being in training)
Why This Changes Everything
Once your dog understands: “I have to listen every time”
You’ll notice:
• Faster responses
• Less hesitation
• More focus
• Less stress
Because your dog no longer has to decide on everything... they now know to trust you.
-Their environment might change, but you stay the same.

Key Takeaway
Your dog only listened when they wanted to — because they’ve learned they can.
To fix it:
• Say commands once
• Follow through every time
• Add accountability
• Train in real environments
• Correct immediately when needed
And once your dog understands that — everything changes.
