How to STOP Mouthing

How to stop playful biting quickly and reliably.

Mouthing is normal — especially for puppies. But normal does not mean it's acceptable to mouth on you.

If you allow it when they’re young, it becomes a habit when they’re bigger, stronger, and more confident.

At Elite K9 Service, we don’t wait for mouthing to “fade out.”

We correct it clearly and reward the behavior we do want.

1. Correct Mouthing Immediately

The moment your dog mouths you:

• Give an abrupt pop on the nose

• Say “No” calmly but firmly

• Remove attention

It’s a quick interruption.

Dogs understand action = consequence.

Late corrections don’t work properly.

Soft corrections don’t work.

Timing is everything.

2. Reward the Behavior You Want

When your dog is not mouthing:

• Give calm attention

• Pet gently

• Reinforce calm behavior

This teaches your dog:

Calm gets attention.

Mouthing makes attention go away.

3. Redirect With a Toy

Most dogs mouth because:

• They’re bored

• They’re excited

• They want engagement

• Teething

Have a toy ready — bones and squeaky toys work great.

When they are not mouthing:

• Offer the toy

• Praise when they bite the toy

This teaches what TO bite instead of just what not to.

4. Use a Leash for Stronger Correction

If mouthing is severe or persistent, keep a leash on your dog when around you.

When they mouth:

• Give an abrupt leash pop

• Say “No”

This is often more effective than a nose pop because:

• It's a more effective correction

• Creates space

• Gives clearer feedback

5. Stay Calm and Consistent

Do NOT:

• Scream

• Laugh

• Play wrestle while mouthing

• Pull your hands away fast

That turns mouthing into a game.

Stay neutral.

Correct.

Move on.

Key Takeaway

Mouthing is normal — but not mouthing on you.

You stop mouthing by:

• Correcting it immediately

• Using “No” consistently

• Redirecting to toys

• Rewarding calm behavior

• Managing with a leash when needed

At Elite K9 Service, we don’t hope bad habits disappear.

We address them early — so they don’t become bigger problems later.
