Addressing Listening Challenges with Clear Communication and Consistency
Objective:
Identify and resolve the reasons behind your dog’s lack of response by improving training, communication, and meeting their needs.
1. Understand Why Your Dog Isn’t Listening
They Don’t Understand: Commands may not have been taught consistently or clearly.
(Dogs don't understand English, they understand action equals a consequence)
Distractions: The environment may be too stimulating. Start training in quiet areas - Work up.
Low Motivation: Use high-value rewards like treats, toys, or praise to engage them.
(Hand feeding food can be very effective -- Recommend Time: 3 weeks)
Unmet Needs: Ensure your dog gets enough exercise, mental stimulation, and rest.
2. Improve Communication
Be Clear: Use short, consistent commands (e.g., “Sit”, “Stay”, "Come", etc.).
Reward Quickly: Reinforce good behavior immediately with treats or praise.
Reward small steps forward (make it very black-and-white for the dog -- This is right, this is wrong
Use Body Language: Pair commands with clear hand signals and calm energy.
3. Strengthen Training
Return to Basics: Revisit simple commands daily in short, focused sessions.
Practice in Steps: Start in distraction-free areas and gradually increase challenges.
Avoid Repeating Commands over and over: Say it once and guide the behavior if needed.
4. Build Trust and Leadership
Be Consistent: Follow the same training techniques and routines every day.
(Refer to other blogs for in-depth training commands on techniques and routines)
Engage Daily: Spend time bonding through play and training.
Stay Calm: Dogs respond best to confident, steady leadership.
(Only correcting when the dog knows he/she did something wrong. Most of the time dogs do not deliberately disobey, that is why we hit very hard on communication in this blog.)
Key Tips:
• Identify the cause of your dog’s behavior—don’t assume stubbornness.
• Train with consistency, clarity, and patience.
• Keep sessions short, engaging, and rewarding (15-45 min, on the longer end for dogs 1+ years old (this varies on certain dogs)
By meeting your dog’s needs and improving communication, you’ll encourage attentive, reliable behavior.
